So, things have been quite busy the past 3 months. First, I was offered – and I accepted – a position as a Senior Staff Geologist with Geosyntec Consultants out of Boca Raton, FL.
I honestly never thought I would move back to South Florida, but the reputation of the company and the benefits/compensation were too appealing to deny. After 3 months, I can honestly say that I am very impressed with the culture here. Everyone is hungry and works hard, but they still show each other (and me) respect and comradery. I’m fairly sure that I’ve established myself as one of the goofier hires, but hey ¯\_(ツ)_/¯…
The work is interesting and as opposed to the familiar corporate MO, Geosyntec seems to encourage personal growth in arenas of your interest. For instance, I was recently invited to the dinner of the IMAG (Information Management Action Group) conference. 1) Geosyntec has their own conferences; 2) One gets to exchange ideas, pleasantries, good food and possibly alcohol free of charge. C’mon! But seriously, it was my supervisor who recognized that I would be interested based on our conversations, and she made sure I was there. I might have even identified who I would like my company mentor to be. Good stuff.
The second big item on the docket… my academic work. I have promised my advisor that I will find the time to: write a methodological article for working with SfM in caves, write a article detailing our finding as Scarisoara, and possibly write up to 15 pages of text for an upcoming book he’s working on. On top of that, I am registered to go to the AGU national conference on December 12th to present a poster of my work. I’m very behind and have little time. I’ve been here before though. I have one month to complete the methodological article draft and create a poster. There are totally enough hours in a month (after subtracting five 8-10 hour days per week), right?
